Reading this reminded me of a simpler time... I was a bookworm growing up, think middle schooler in the 90s. No phones, no computer. I would spend hours lost in reading, a book every 3-4 days. No stress, no distractions. In 2026, my only long form reading is substack and there's a layer of tension in my reading, sometimes skimming- as you put into words. It's also an issue of abundance...there's unlimited articles to access, each with immediate chance at engagement, reading comments, leaving comments.

Jim, I just skimmed your article and, really, you need to examine your reading habits more instead of blaming the articles you're reading.
